Sawhorse Hill Equine Therapy has been providing experiential therapy in partnership with horses since 1998.

Safety is a primary goal of orientation to the Program

Safety is a primary goal in equine therapy.  Focus, knowledge, respect and partnership are all required to assure a safe environment.  All of the exercises are unmounted and many people attend the programs that have never had any experience with horses.  Respect for the size and weight of these magnificent animals is only a part of the solution.  Participants also receive thorough training on how to be around the horses, handle them, halter, lead and groom them.  Partnership, however, is a key element in this work. The horses are introduced to the participants as sentient beings with feelings and intelligence.  This awareness allows the individual to experience "Power With" Vs. "Power Over" these animals.  Finally, yet importantly, to maintain the highest level of safety in the program, Focus is required.  Working with the horses quickly teaches participants the importance of mindful living.

Since 1999, Pavillon International, a residential center for adults suffering with substance abuse disorders, has been utilizing Sawhorse Hill and its team of Equine Therapy Horses to provide its patients with experiences that identify treatment issues and uncover negative beliefs and self-defeating attitudes. Through the various exercises with the horse, the patients are able to let down their walls and learn to live their lives more authentically.
