Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy and Learning HORSES AS MIRRORS
People who suffer from addictions, depression, codependence, or PTSD are frequently fragmented. They are disconnected from aspects of themselves that they are unable to cope with such as their feelings of anger, grief, feelings of inadequacy or insecurity, powerlessness or fears and low self-esteem. Being fragmented results in a loss of personal power and creates the need for a false self to compensate for the lack of authenticity. Strong defenses and denial patterns are developed to keep those feelings hidden, which cannot be confronted and dealt with in a healthy manner. Historically, the horse has depended on its powerful instincts for survival. These instincts enable the animal to sense immediately any lack of congruence in an individual and will respond in a manner consistent to its nature. The horse will not willingly connect with an individual who is fragmented because it will not feel attracted energetically to that person and may even be uncomfortable in that person's "space". The animal will communicate its level of discomfort in subtle ways. The horse then, becomes a powerful indicator for the therapist who will use this "Mirror" to help the client see himself/herself more clearly. Utilizing Equine Facilitated Therapy, people are able to identify areas where they are incongruent, loose or give away their power or use substances to cope with unresolved life issues. While working with the horses, people begin to reclaim their personal power, identify and change unconscious negative beliefs and operate more authentically in all areas of their lives.
Sawhorse Hill Equine Therapy offers many opportunities for an individual to discover the best of him or her self and discover those issues that keep one from fully expressing his or her magnificence in the world. The horses respond to us in a way that allows us to clearly and immediately see those things that are ours to change so that we can be more fully ourselves.
